Part of a Brawl: McCarty vs. Lemieux

The fight between Claude Lemieux, playing for the Colorado Avalanches, and Darren McCarty, who was playing for the Red Wings, was part of the infamous brawl on March 26, 1997.  This is when there were at least nine fights throughout the game and tensions were at their peak.  This was a night that many consider to be when the best hockey fight in the history of the game happened.  It is referred to by many names, all of which reflect the chaos and madness of that night.

On that March night, there were many fights that could be considered the best hockey fights of all time.  The fight between Lemieux and McCarty started because of tensions and altercations of players that were at each other’s throats, either earlier that night or in a previous game.  Because of the high tensions, everyone in the game was ready to fight.  McCarty seen this as an opportunity to get into a fight with a player of the other team and escaped the grasp of the referee.  When he met up to Lemieux and threw a right hook.  After quite a few hard blows, Lemieux fell to the ground and covered his head; many remember this as the turtle incident.  Before the fight was separated, he managed to drag Lemieux to the boards and kneed him in the head.

The fight didn’t start or stop there.  Many other team mates on both sides were fighting before it was over with.  The altercations that happened on that night will forever be itched in the minds of the fans, officials and players as one of the best hockey fights ever.

A History of Brawls: Laraque and Cote

The best hockey fights in the history of the sport can be started out with the battle between Georges Laraque and Riley Cote.  The brawl between these two players will forever be remembered by ice hockey fans all over the world.

One of the best hockey fights was the awesome brawl between Big Georges Laraque, who was playing for the Pittsburg Penguins at the time, and Riley Cote of the Philadelphia Flyers started after a few words were passed before lining up at the starting point.  That’s when the gloves came off.  The altercation happened on April 2, 2009.  It can be considered a true clash of the titans as these two start to throw down and continued to fight for almost a minute before getting separated and taken to their penalty boxes.

One reason this fight will be forever known to be one of the best hockey fights and itched into ice hockey fan’s memories is because Laraque and Cote were locked on to each other while they continued to throw punches.  Before the end of the fight, Laraque hit Cote in the head so hard, it sent his helmet flying into the air.  Neither men had much in the way of injuries, although with Cote loosing his head protection, it could’ve turned out badly if they didn’t get them separated.  The fight lasted for a very short time, but it is considered to be on the list of the best hockey fights.

This is just one of the best hockey fights that have fans of the sport wanting more.  The video of the fight between Laraque and Cote can be seen here:

A Brawl with the Best: Clarkson vs. Downie

There is a true love for the game of ice hockey by the fans, but the games are made more exciting by the fights that break out during the game.  One of the best hockey fights that has happened in the last couple years is the one that occurred between David Clarkson and Steve Downie.

It is said that on January 22, 2008, Downie of the Philadelphia Flyers had been antagonizing Clarkson of the New Jersey Devils for quite some time during the game before the fight actually broke out.  He had been slinging words and pretty much daring Clarkson to fight him, and then there was the full body shove.  Well, it didn’t take long for Downie to get the hint and they started throwing punches.  This altercation is known to be to be one of the best hockey fights of the year.

The refs let the fight go on for almost a minute before they locked on each other.  After they had got their punches over, it was clear that Clarkson had received an injury over his left eye.  The two didn’t receive any penalties for their teams, but the Flyers soon gained the reputation as being a team that would rather fight than to play the game.  They are sure to show up again as being part of the best hockey fights.

Let it be known that if anyone would like to see one of the best hockey fights of the year, watch the fight between these two players here:

A Fight to Remember: Vial vs. Ray

One of the best hockey fights of 1996 happened on the night of April 10th between Dennis Vial and Rob Ray.  It occurred at the beginning of the third period and it was a good one.

The incident occurred as soon as the two teams, the Ottawa Senators and the Buffalo Sabres, started the face-off.  Vial and Ray dropped their gloves and starting trading punches as if they were in the boxing ring.  When Vial fell and Ray was continuing to punch him, the linemen stepped in to stop the brawl.  The punches were furious and fast coming, making this fight seem as if it had been coming between these two players for quite some time.  It is clear to see why this altercation is known to be one of the best hockey fights of the year.

The fight didn’t last very long, but there were apparent injuries.  Vial had blood running down the left side of his face as he skated to his teammates.  At the same time, Ray was in good spirits as he made his way back to the dressing room, smiling and giving his team members high fives.  He obviously knew he was part of one of the best hockey fights in 1996.

It is not clear why the fight started in the first place, but whatever it was, it was settled on the ice in one of the best hockey fights. It happens quickly, but you can feel the power between these two players. Watch the fight below.
